The 2009 Joiners & Ceilers' Award
Promoting Excellence in Craft Skill
The Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers will be pleased to receive applications from suitable candidates wishing to participate in the Company's 2009 Competition. This prestigious event is open to those who have recently completed, or who are nearing the completion of their training in the craft of joinery or its related activities.
Participation in this practical craft test draws candidates from throughout the United kingdom. It allows men and women to compete for this prestigious award while at the same time being able to demonstrated their acquired skills in the craft of joinery.
The award of a Joiners' Company Merit Certificate could well advance career opportunities. Receipt of the Joiners' Award for the top candidate is a lifetime distinction, quite apart from the pleasure which ownership of the valuable "Joiners' Square" and the accompanying grant of the Freedom of the Worshipful Company brings.
The Employer of the Winner will receive a Certificate suitable for display.
The test will take place in early May 2009 at the workshops of Killby & Gayford Joinery Limited, 30 Radford Way, Billericay, Essex, and/or at another location in the London Area to be advised.
Competitors will be required to complete a set piece of work under supervision, and between the hours of 8.00am and 5.30pm, with a half hour lunch break from 12.30 to 1.00pm.
The test piece will enable craftsmen to demonstrate their ability to carry out joinery commissions to good commercial standards, with emphasis on the interpretation of drawings, setting out and marking out of work and the skilled use of hand tools.
Materials will be supplied by the Company, but the entrant will provide such hand tools of his, or her, own as are normally appropriate to a working joiner (including routers and drills 110v but not sanders or chop/portable saws).
The Company very much appreciates the support of sponsors Killby & Gayford Limited, by the use of their workshop, James Latham plc, by the supply of timber for the skill test.

The Company
One of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London, the Worshipful Company of Joiners & Ceilers, throughout its long and continuous existence has sought to promote excellence in joinery.
As historic documents held by the City Corporation show, the Company was already a large brotherhood of skilled craftsmen in 1269, with numerous apprentices. The Company controlled all aspects of the craft, regulating standards and collecting fines from those judged to have sold substandard work.
Queen Elizabeth I confirmed these already ancient rights on 14 April 1571 when she granted a charter to the Company to maintain this control "in perpetuity". But as further centuries passed these rights fell into abeyance. The Company was a founder of the City & Guilds of London Institute and continues positively to encourage the highest craft standards, particularly in training. The Joiners & Ceilers' Annual Award plays an important part in these efforts.
