About Livery Companies and Charitable Trusts

Being a Liveryman of a City Livery Company is an honour which brings responsibilities to the Master, the Court and the Company as a whole and they swear an oath on introduction to reflect this. One of those responsibilities is charitable giving. As a company we do this through the Charitable Trust.

What is the purpose of the Charitable Trust?

Well primarily to foster the craft of joinery by making grants and providing prizes. Any surplus distributable income may, at the discretion of the Court of Assistants, be used for general charitable donations.

We try to grow the capital through prudent investment but this has obviously been difficult in recent years. Contributions by Liverymen and other supporters are added to capital whilst Poor Box contributions are added to distributable income

How is the money spent?

Part is spent on the annual Joiners Prize and equal contributions to the Lord Mayor's Appeal; the Master's chosen charity and St James Garlickhythe. The first call on what is left goes to awards made by the Master Joiner's Purse, which are grants for the furtherance of the craft of joinery and woodcarving. Historically, remaining monies have been used to support other City based charities or the specific activities of Liverymen or their apprentices.
