Joiners Craft Competition 2009

This annual competition which is open to all students, apprentices or craftsmen still within their first year of completing their training and who reside within the United Kingdom, was held on 9th May 2009 at the joinery workshop of Killby and Gayford Ltd.

The design for the competition and its judging is set each year by the Craft Committee of the Joiners and Ceilers livery company. This team, who themselves have served apprenticeships in joinery or carpentry, aim to set an achievable target but one which is demanding enough to allow the candidates to demonstrate their craft skills to the fullest. A working drawing is issued to each competitor seven days in advance of the competition to allow rods and templates to be prepared in advance. This provides an opportunity for candidates to fully familiarise themselves with the task and for them to commence with a flying start.

Twenty one competitors took part in this nine hour test which was to make a joiners/carpenters stool with an integral drawer. The first prize is the coveted Joiners and Ceilers engraved silver tri-square, a cheque for £1000 and a certificate, all of which are presented at a dinner held by The Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers. The second prize is £500 and the third and fourth prizes, £50. All competitors receive a cheque for £25 for taking part.

Judging took place throughout the day with marks being allocated for methodology, accuracy and the completed item. The judges considered that the quality of work achieved was exceptionally high and ranked this year`s standards as being amongst the best in the history of the competition which has now been running for fifteen years. It is worth noting that some of the past prize winners of this National event have gone on to be awarded with the Master Craft Certificate, an award which reflects the highest level of achievement.
