Installation of James de Sausmarez as Master
On 18 August 2009, James de Sausmarez was installed as the Master of the Company for the ensuing year. At his installation lunch with the Court of Assistants he cast back to when he was 8 years old and made a promise that “he would do his best, do his duty to God and the Queen and to help other people”. He stated that he had sought to live by that promise and he made the promise again for his year as Master and commented on each part:
“Do his best” – James stressed that he would be doing his best to maintain the dignity of the office of Master, represent the Company well, further the promotion of the craft as a central theme, make Company events meaningful and memorable and seek to make the Joiners a Company people want to join.
“Duty to God” – James reminded the Court that we were a “Worshipful” company and that the Christian tradition was central to all we do. He thanked Liveryman Paul Hunt for agreeing to be his Chaplain for the year and committed them both to ensure that the Company’s worship was filled with meaning and truth.
Duty to the Queen” – James noted that the City Corporation was the Executive arm of the Queen in the City and he urged the Court to join him in striving to increase the profile of the Company within the City so that we can at least punch at our weight as the number 41 Livery Company. He also commended the Company’s affiliation with HMS Astute where we, like many other Livery Companies, are providing real support to Her Majesty’s Royal Navy
“Help other people” – James emphasised the importance of charitable fund raising and drew attention to his own efforts for his chosen charity, Botton Village. He also highlighted the creation of the new Charity which, in addition to helping him with his efforts, had a crucial role to raise funds for our own Charitable Trust. He also emphasised that in this world of “self, self, self” we should all stand ready to help both those in need and those who ask for help. Best results are always achieved where everyone works together in a spirit of willingness.
James concluded by saying that there is an exciting year ahead with a full programme of events, which he urged all to support, and the launch of our revamped Committees. He hoped that all Liverymen would share his energy and enthusiasm for the Company over the coming year and beyond. He concluded by repeating his promise.
