A historic City fellowship — open to modern professionals

The Worshipful Company of Joiners & Ceilers is one of London’s ancient livery companies, bringing together people who care about craft, community, and the life of the City.

Who are the Joiners & Ceilers?

Founded in 1571, the Worshipful Company of Joiners & Ceilers is a historic City of London livery company.

Today, we are a friendly and active fellowship of people from a wide range of professional backgrounds — united by an interest in craftsmanship, education, charity, and the traditions of the City.

While our roots are in joinery and decorative woodwork, modern membership is open to those who value what the Company stands for, not just those who work in the trade.

What is a Livery Company?

Livery companies are historic membership organisations that play a unique role in the life of the City of London.

They combine social fellowship, charitable giving, professional networks, and civic traditions — including the Freedom of the City of London.

Today’s livery companies are very much living organisations, supporting education, apprenticeships, and community causes, while offering members access to events, ceremonies, and friendships that are difficult to find elsewhere.

Why do people join us?

To become part of a historic city institution

To enjoy social events, dinners and unique venues

To support apprenticeships, bursaries and education

To connect with people across professions and generations

To give something back through charity and service

Making a difference, supporting our community.

If you are unsure whether membership is right for you, we are very happy to have an informal conversation.

What does membership involve?

Membership is a journey, shaping the future together.

Livery membership offers camaraderie, inclusion and lifelong connections. Newcomers swiftly become trusted  friends.

It typically begins with an informal welcoming introduction and attendance at one or two events. Interested individuals may apply to become a Freeman of the Joiners and Ceilers Livery Company, Freedom of the City of London leading to becoming a Liveryman.

There are annual subscriptions and occasional event costs but there is no expectation to attend everything or commit excessive time. Members participate at a level that suits their own lives.

The Company actively supports apprentices, craft awards, bursaries, and educational initiatives connected to joinery and related crafts. We also contribute to wider City and charitable causes, reflecting the traditional role of livery companies in supporting the community.
